What should a first product version actually prove?

A practical way to decide what belongs in an MVP, what can wait and what evidence matters.

Published September 2026

Begin with the decision

An MVP is useful when it helps a team make a meaningful decision. Before choosing features, define what must become clearer: whether people need the product, whether the workflow works or whether the economics can support it.

Build the smallest complete experience

Small should still feel coherent. Give one audience a clear path from need to outcome. A narrow experience that works builds more confidence than a wide collection of unfinished features.

Measure behaviour, not compliments

Positive feedback is encouraging, but repeated use, completed tasks and willingness to pay are stronger signals. Design the first release so those behaviours can be observed without interpretation.
